Trained by the only living Hunger Games victor from their district, Katniss and Peeta enter an uneasy alliance as they fight for survival and for a better life for their district. Catching Fire : Katniss and Peeta return to District 12 heroes — not only did they win, but both got to return home, a first in the history of the games.
However, the Capitol the creepy President Snow, in particular is furious with Katniss for ensuring their dual victory. Both are forced to return to the arena, along with former winners from the other districts, to once again fight for their life. Mockingjay : Mockingjay is the final book in the trilogy and the battle for Panem unity and for the Capitol yep, gave that away. Anyone who survived the all-stars Hunger Games of Catching Fire is pretty much messed up, despite being considered the face of the revolution.
Part entertainment, part brutal retribution for a past rebellion, the televised games are broadcast throughout Panem. The 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors while the citizens of Panem are required to watch. When year-old Katniss' young sister, Prim, is selected as District 12's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place.
She and her male counterpart, Peeta, are pitted against bigger, stronger representatives, some of whom have trained for this their whole lives. Set in a future North America known as "Panem", the Capitol selects a boy and a girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each of the twelve outlying districts to compete in the annual "Hunger Games", a televised fight-to-the-death. The film is centered around Katniss Everdeen - a year-old girl from District 12, who volunteers for her year-old sister, Prim, when Prim's name is chosen - and Katniss's fellow District 12 tribute, Peeta Mellark, with whom she has some rather dramatic history.
Katniss is then rushed to the Capitol, where she undergoes intense training before being thrust into the arena to fight to become the victor of the seventy-fourth annual Hunger Games. That evening, Katniss and Peeta discover that Thresh has died. Katniss and Peeta discover that the pools and streams have dried up, forcing them to the lake.
Peeta's leg is wounded by the muttations. They spend the night on the Cornucopia. The Hunger Games ends. Katniss is tranquilized.
She sleeps on and off, unaware of how much time has passed. Katniss wakes and her reunion with Peeta is televised to the nation. They attend the Victory Banquet. Katniss and Peeta have their final televised interviews. They board the train for District Katniss confesses her confused feelings to Peeta. On the fifth day after the reaping, the narrative tells us that it is a Sunday. But when she forms an alliance with Rue, Rue informs her about how much time has passed.
At first, Peeta tells her he's not sure how long she's been asleep, since she was already sleeping when he woke up. However, he tells Katniss that he woke up "yesterday evening," and then later says that he saw Clove's picture in the sky that night, so that tells us he must have woken up the same day that Katniss returned to the cave, and Katniss awoke the following day. I have guessed three days, since the book mentions that there are usually "a few" days between the end of the games and the final interviews.
As the timeline makes clear, twenty-four days pass from Reaping Day until the final winners are known. It is another five days before they reach their homes and their loved ones. Understanding this caused me to appreciate the plight of the characters involved even more than I had before.
Because of the book's fast pace and quick readability, it is easy to lose sight of just how much time is passing for Katniss, Peeta, and the other tributes during this book. Knowing just how much time passes from the day of the reaping until the day the winners return to their districts adds to the horror of the games for not only the contestants, but their loved ones back home in their districts who must endure watching them unfold.
I actually hate Hunger Games but I have to read in in a Reading Group so these will work out great for my answers thx. I probably won't have a similar timeline for all of Catching Fire, because the action in that book is reported differently. The Hunger Games actually gives a day-by-day report of the day's events and is careful to note the transitions between day and night. If I recall correctly and it has been a few months since I read it so I could be mistaken!
The couple found each other and some peace away from the politics of Panem, but they are both very much affected by the games. Katniss still has nightmares, but by the end of Hunger Games she is content with playing a much lower stakes game when the bad dreams haunt her then living in the world of pain that created them.
Many loose ends are tied at the end of Mockingjay Part 2 , but it also does leave some opportunities for more story to occur in the future. Josh Hutcherson has shown interest in returning for a sequel, even with an idea in mind and we hope we do see another chapter to the saga with the original cast someday.
For now, Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins published a prequel to her popular series earlier this year, The Ballad of Songbird and Snakes , which tells the story of President Snow as a teenager.
And a movie is in the works with Francis Lawrence, who directed Catching Fire and both Mockingjay films on board to adapt the movie. What did you think of how Mockingjay finished the series? Vote in the poll below.
