Retro game challenge list

In this confrontation, you had to beat the alien queen, who not only looks very creepy, but can also devour you, sending you back to the beginning of the previous level. Using the unique approach of progressing through the actual pages of a comic, moving from panel to panel, Comix Zone mixed hand-to-hand combat with puzzles and a non-linear level structure to brilliant effect. Puzzles can be tricky too, and you have to plan ahead and carry the right items with you to progress in the best state.

Oh, did we mention that you have one life? Did anyone else shudder when they had to tackle that? Here the central theme is color. More specifically black and white. Enemy projectiles in the game are either black or white. By switching the polarity of your ship to either one, you can absorb bullets of that color. This not only makes you invulnerable to that polarity, but it also powers up a special weapon that can devastate your foes.

However, it also came with a new feature—an amazingly steep difficulty curve. Knowing all of the tells and signposted moves is essential, but where Punch-Out!! Even the best players of the game have said that you really need to put in a perfect performance to beat Tyson, and there are specific tactics used to defeat him. For most players, however, he still remains that undefeated champion, one that taunts them endlessly.

Surely one of the most anticipated games ever, the NES title based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a game that every child of the 80s just had to have. The Turtles were so popular, it was bound to become an instant classic.

So it did. It could be argued that this game goes against our rules of games being legitimately hard and not badly designed. Some have said the game was cheap, and the difficulty was over the top. The water level alone is enough to make most seasoned gamers weep. Gah, our apologies. Long lists like this tend to spill over two pages, just to keep loading times—especially on mobile-y things—relatively sane. Maybe not if taken with the major difficult points like the aforementioned water level and the Technodrome.

At all times, this game is tricky, devious, and outright mean. Castlevania has so many difficult aspects. This is the game series that made most 80s gamers hate wavy line enemy movement patterns with all their might.

Finally, we have the bosses, some of the trickiest around, and certainly some of the most unique for the time. Most traditional side-scrolling Mario games are tricky. In fact, the game is so hard, it was first refused entry over here. Eventually we got the actual second Mario game in the form of The Lost Levels , and players who finally gave it a go saw what all the fuss was about and promptly invested in a spare controller.

This is an unfair judgement, as on release there was only the first Zelda game preceding it, so the series had hardly hit its stride or found its niche. Still, Nintendo obviously agreed, as subsequent Zelda games mostly reverted to the top-down approach. Zelda II is hard, very hard. However, the main sticking point for many is Death Mountain.

Death Mountain is a staple location in the Zelda universe, and is often featured as a main dungeon. This notoriously difficult boss had been the bane of many a gamer, and although there are simple and even easy ways to beat it, before players discovered such tactics many thought this boss was just plain unbeatable.

As simple soldiers with an array of weapons, players had to take on an alien force across several missions, including side-scrolling, platform shooting sections and psuedo-3D shooting galleries.

Waves of enemies constantly assaulted players, as well as some fearsome bosses. Through all of this, you had three lives with one-hit kills to beat the game. You also had to contend with deadly pitfalls and a timer. In this world, no one can survive alone. Team up with friends to fend off countless waves of zombies, fight bosses, earn coins, level up, and buy new towers! NO Assets has been stolen this time.
